The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed three cases of swine-origin triple reassortant influenza A (H3N2) (S-OtrH3N2) virus infection in three children located in Iowa. No child required hospitalization and all recovered from a mild episode of febrile respiratory illness. All three children were in contact with one another, but none were known to have a recent exposure to swine. Although no additional human infections were detected  surveillance is ongoing. This new virus contains the matrix (M) gene from the pandemic 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus but H3 and N2 from swine origin. Including this latest report and since 2009, a total of 18 instances of swine-origin influenza A (H3N2) virus infection have occurred.  For 2011, 3 have occurred in Iowa, 3 in Pennsylvania, 2 in Maine, and 2 from Indiana.
